A LITTLE MORE CLARITY
An interim leader can help when a business needs experienced leadership for a specific period or outcome: a management vacancy, turnaround, market entry, rapid growth or transformation. Define the business problem first, then agree the required authority, deliverables, milestones and handover with the proposed leader.
An interim leader normally takes an operational role inside the business and leads implementation with an agreed level of decision-making authority. A consultant may instead provide advice or analysis. The roles can overlap, so the contract should clearly define responsibility for decisions, delivery and results.
There is no single standard duration. An assignment should last long enough to deliver the agreed objective and transfer responsibility effectively. A short leadership gap may need a different approach from a business transformation. Agree milestones, review points and the expected end condition before work starts.
Describe the business challenge, the role or expertise needed, the location, the expected start date and any important constraints. It helps to explain what success would look like and who will sponsor the assignment. Share only information you are authorised to disclose; detailed commercial information can follow once confidentiality arrangements are agreed.
Fees depend on the mandate, seniority, specialist expertise, time commitment and location. BIA does not publish a standard assignment rate. Confirm the scope, expenses, payment terms and any outcome-related fees with the proposed leader before signing an agreement.
No. BIA supports professional connections and conversations, but each enquiry requires a separate assessment of fit and availability. The parties agree the contract and responsibilities for the assignment. Business outcomes depend on the agreed mandate, the organisation and implementation.
